the emote effect
> the emoji effect (see math below)
too lazy or impatient to read a long-ish article from Discord? i can relate! (honestly, i skimmed it…)
we’ve kept whoomp.io super profesh and haven’t used emojis all over the place. however, this fire article from Discord’s blog – The Emoji Effect – goes over how important emojis have become in Discord communities and has me questioning this decision
TLDR fun facts:
- between sent emojis and emoji reactions, over 436 BILLION emojis have been used since Discord’s launch in 2015
- 455K emojis sent per minute
- if you’re younger, you’re
coolermore likely to use emojis to express emotions and personality - there are 500 million custom emojis across all of Discord’s servers
- power quote from my man Neil Cohn (love you Neil*) – “Emojis act as our positive reinforcement for online communication. Despite being graphics, we often perceive emojis like faces. And the sight of another’s smiling face is often enough to make us do the same.”
“how does this relate to whoomp?” you ask – here’s some rough math for you: an emoji is worth 1000 words, and emotes are 1 million times more expressive than emojis, so emotes are worth 1 billion words**
oh also, this is the perfect excuse to introduce the subjects of the whoomp founder’s mint emotes: MIXED EMOJIS. more rough math, these are at LEAST twice as expressive as a standard emoji (1000 + 1000 = 2000 which is 2 x 1000)
* i don’t actually know Neil Cohn
** “emotes are 1 million times more expressive than emojis” claim based on extensive user testing validated by Ragnar (see whoomp team page for credentials)
